"These handpieces just keep on cutting."
March 21st 2012My staff and I love the Midwest Tradition handpiece. How much you ask? Well, we have 13 of them in the office. We use the latch style with fiber optic lighting. The handpiece’s small head makes visibility and access very easy in the back areas of the mouth. It also is perfect for the limited space in pedo patients.
Case acceptance robbers and how to stop them
March 21st 2012They are lurking in your office waiting to steal treatment plans and hide them in the unscheduled treatment reports in your computer. If you track case acceptance, you are one step ahead of these robbers because you can then start to identify and analyze your systems and communication skills to find your vulnerable areas and take steps to shore them up. Guessing or using your “gut feeling” about case acceptance will not serve you well. A good goal to aim for is 85% for new patients; 90% for patients of record.
Legacy Labs: Schmitt Dental Laboratory
March 21st 2012The job ad called for a driver who also wouldn’t mind doing sweeping and other light clean-up work. No weekend work was required and it also promised to teach skills that could be turned into a profession. Mary Ann Miles was fresh out of high school when she responded to that ad 40 years ago. She never guessed that it would turn into a lifelong occupation and that she would become a co-owner of Schmitt Dental Laboratory Inc. in Saginaw, Mich.
Developing a hygiene philosophy of care
March 21st 2012Many dentists have a written document that outlines their practice’s vision and philosophy. Ideally, the doctor shares this with the dental team and with patients as it is not only a statement of what you aspire to attain, but it is a useful tool for clear communication. It has been said that the difference between a vision and a hallucination is how many people see it! If your team and patients have not seen your practice philosophy, it may be a hallucination.
Handling the patient complaint
March 21st 2012“You’re wrong!” A patient complaint is as powerful as a slap in the face. The words sting and when they come from a patient it most certainly feels like a threat to your integrity. Most people are tempted to show how they cannot possibly be wrong. Most people want to prove not only that they are in the right, but that the other person-in this case, the patient-is wrong.
Ask Amy: Thinking like an owner
March 21st 2012Q: How do I get my team motivated to think like an owner and go the extra mile? First and foremost, no one can motivate anyone to do anything. Motivation has to come from within! It’s an internal process, a reason to act a certain way based on the good ole’ radio station WII FM (What’s in it for me?). So if that’s the case, why are there jillions of books, lectures and articles written on this very topic?
GCAT to accept 3Shape scan files
March 21st 2012Starting June 1, GC Advanced Technologies (GCAT) will begin accepting remote scan and design electronic STL files for custom abutments and copings from 3Shape users. This new enhanced digital relationship with 3Shape will allow for dental laboratories that have the 3Shape scanning system to remotely scan the models, design the case in lab, and send the electronic files to GCAT for milling. Or, the dental laboratories can choose to just remotely scan the models and send the electronic files to GCAT for design and milling of the Custom Abutments or Copings.

Restore teenage smiles: No more bullying
March 21st 2012Bullied for years and enduring cruel taunts from her classmates, Micah would cry herself to sleep every night. The teasing grew worse with each passing day, and finally her peers resorted to cyber bullying, calling her names and posting their harsh words online for all to see. Called “Tiger Teeth” by her peers, she found making friends difficult and suffered in pain every day. “No one wants to be around the girl with ragged teeth,” she once remarked.
