Bench Mastery: Using the anaxFORM system for provisionals [VIDEO]

More often than not, technicians outsource provisional restorations because it can be difficult to make provisional restorations predictably and to make them profitable. But what if the matrix and flask used to fabricate the provisional could also be used to fabricate the final acrylic restoration?

Image is everything

The advantages of implementing and using 3D cone beam imaging technology in dental practice are undeniable, and these benefits have led to the technology’s fast-paced advance into both everyday general dentistry as well as into specialty dental practice. This is despite the higher entry costs in terms of both financial and educational / training investments by a profession that is not known for investing in technologies that do not benefit patients and bring a significant return on investment.

The real cost of your HazCom binder

As the second most common OSHA violation, most dental offices already have the Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) on their radar. Each office should have at least one staff member who understands the requirement to keep safety data for products both “readily available” and “up to date” in a work area regularly used by employees.

Your lab, your partner

I have to start this article off with a big “wow.” Wow! How can I limit this to just one tip, when my lab does so much? I feel very fortunate to have a lab, strike that, THE lab, that gives me exactly what I need when I need it and meets even my unrecognized needs. It all starts with our “pearl” of the day, communication. From single-unit crowns to bridges to smile designs, there is a lot of information that is exchanged between me and my lab tech, Jeff Austin, at Utah Valley Dental Lab.

Why the Orbiter curing light shield is something to consider

I’d love to introduce you to The Orbiter®! It is the first curing light eyeshield of its kind and stands apart from the rest for some amazing reasons! It rotates freely 360 degrees, which allows the clinician to adjust the filter into position "on the fly" while curing. It is also self-uprights, which brings the filter into your line of sight for most positions. These unique features make the curing process very efficient and saves time during the day.

Give them something extra

We see it, hear it, read it, and we live it every day. Our economy has taken a dive and it has shown in the bottom line of our dental practices. So what can we do to help counter the effects of the downturn? One of the great things about being a general dentist is we have the opportunity to provide a diverse offering of services to our patients. I’ve been practicing for nearly 13 years, and still thoroughly enjoy the diversity of being a general dentist every day. Each day is different from the last and you never know what you might get tomorrow.

Implementing eco-friendly infection control

Preventing pathogen transmission among patients and dental health care personnel is the primary goal of infection prevention in the dental office. During the course of the work day, clinicians repeatedly perform hand hygiene, wear personal protective equipment, clean and disinfect surfaces (or apply surface barriers), sterilize instruments, maintain dental unit waterlines, and use single-use disposable items. These tasks often involve equipment and products that produce much waste, consume excess energy, and use toxic chemicals.

Coping with high gold prices

Ah, the good ‘ole PFM: the staple of fixed prosthetics since the 1960s. Even in this new age of all-ceramic restorations, gold alloys are still used in a significant percentage of the cases done in most labs. IdentAlloy/IdentCeram, which certifies materials used in dental restorations, reports that in 2008 high-noble and noble alloy certificates comprised 69% of the certificates shipped by the organization. Final figures for 2009 are not available yet, however early indications are that this figure will be down but not as much as you might think.
