While his staff members use them on a regular basis, Dr. Thomas Trinkner also likes to use his curing light quite a bit. With a family practice that is dedicated to cosmetics and reconstruction, the cosmetic dentistry pioneer reaches for his Bluephase Style LED curing light all the time and loves that he can count on it for consistent results.
Dr. Trinkner, the first accredited member of the AACD from South Carolina, was one of the first clinicians to get the Bluephase Style in his hand.
How did you first hear about the Bluephase Style and what do you like best about it?
I got one of the very first ones that came out, and I just loved it. With today’s design, Ivoclar has really upped its game. The ergonomics is obviously really important. I tend to use my light more than my assistant at times because it is quicker for me to think about where and for how long I want to tack a particular restoration. With ceramic, mistakes on tacking can be expensive.

I have great confidence in it. A lot of it has to do with the different wavelengths that it cures with and the fact that in some instances I prefer to use a smaller tip.
It has a really nice size and shape so I can direct the light exactly where I want. The design and the lightweight facet has changed the way I do things.

The assistants really like the Bluephase Style, and I like that it’s durable. Also, I’ve really narrowed my dental material down to the specific products that I prefer … fortunately, many of the products that I do prefer are all within the corporate realm of Ivoclar. So I know that my products are developed to correlate with this particular curing and the design of this instrument.
The Bluephase Style is a great tool for any practice. I feel very confident with it. The design of the light probe makes it easy to access all areas of the mouth. The shape and the way it works make it ideal-even for someone like a new assistant who may not have all the scientific background.
Why would you recommend the Bluephase Style to a colleague?
No. 1, Ivoclar has worked really hard on its scientific background, the literature and the research on the spectrums that are needed. It tried to incorporate a design that will reach a broad range of materials. I think that is important. Not everyone is going to practice like I do; not everyone is going to focus on using a fewer number of dental materials. Also, I’m using a lot of Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill and would prefer to use a curing light from the same manufacturer so I know the material cures properly.
This curing light fits my world. It allows me to keep my products at the best quality, yet not need to have tons of materials in here, and do high end dentistry.
I love the way the company, in general, does its research and really looks down the line to make sure all the products interact in a concise form and that they can be predictable. That’s one of the things about the company I’ve always liked. They’ve really tested all the materials.
Bluephase Style
The Bluephase Style uses LED curing light technology in a slim, lightweight and user-friendly design. Its polywave technology provides a broadband spectrum of 385 nm to 515 nm that can cure all dental materials. Because of its energy-efficient LED technology, the light does not produce a large amount of internal heat, which provides continuous curing without clinical limitations. Additionally, Bluephase Style’s light probe can maximize posterior access; the 10 mm diameter of the probe allows clinicians to cure restorations in 10 seconds. It also features an ergonomic design for ease of use and comfort, and the easy-to-use two-button operation makes Bluephase Style intuitive and user-friendly.
