As the push for digital patient records continues, more and more offices are embracing the concept of truly chartless technology. Once the infrastructure is in place, moving forward into chartless is easy, but some offices are concerned about the availability of radiographs that are still stored in their older analog charts. Although it isn’t necessary to convert all of your old paper records to digital charts, in some instances the doctor prefers having access to that information.

When it comes to using dental sealants on pediatric patients, we were excited to find that 96% of you are actively engaging in this form of preventive care. On the flip side, it was disappointing to find that in the instances when you wouldn’t (or couldn’t) place sealants, the majority of you (66%) said it was because insurance won’t cover the procedure. And, even as we all work toward encouraging dental insurance companies to cover more preventive procedures, as 39% of you indicate, educating patients is still a hurdle as well.

If you think your current level of attention to the needs of your patients, both current and prospective is 'good enough,' think again.

It won’t be long before children will creep out of their beds at night hoping to see a glimpse of jolly, red-suited Santa sliding down the chimney with a bag full of wrapped presents. Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah are approaching and one dental practice, My Family Dental Centers, wants to make the holiday season merry for everyone – including the youngest members of their communities. Office staffers began making preparations in October to ensure that all children have presents to unwrap.

Meetings are microcosms of an office’s culture. They reveal the practice’s true values. Consider a dental practice where meetings are infrequent, poorly run and allow team members to be late, bored or passive. One could conclude that this behavior extends to all areas of the practice, including the treatment of patients. It would suggest that team members’ ideas and opinions are not highly valued and the processes of decision-making and problem-solving are not priorities. In contrast, an office that holds frequent, well run meetings where team members are expected to contribute likely has a culture where collaboration, team work and communication are highly prized.
