There are various psychological theories of how hypnotic trance works. The simplest explanation is to go to its origins, viewing hypnotic trance as an instinctive behavioral response of primal man to cognitively modulate his fight or flight psyche stress. In other words primal man used  rapid trance to  instinctually dissociate from the stress and conflict of the reality of a survival threat. This provided  him the time space in his mind to problem solve a fighting tactic and/or an escape route of which to become absorbed in.

Evolving, adapting acquiring enhanced fitness using this instinctual capacity for dissociative rapid trance modern man (15,000BC) with his  burgeoning cognitive aptitude and larger brain build upon this primal instinct, learning to  dissociate within the safety and stillness of the depths of his caves to become absorbed in the impassioned visions of his desired reality as embodied is his cave paintings of foods sources, the hunt, the kill  mortality, leaving his mark on the world, the lunar cycle. These painted visions portray trance realities involving higher centers of cognitive functioning  beyond that of primal  fight or flight trance. The paintings are reflective of a culture of enhanced fitness as derived through trance.

Although modern man is not threatened by the Saber Toothed Tiger,  we  are subject to the stress of perceived  threats triggering the same physiology as it did in our early day forefathers. Stress, in the absence of its cognitive modulation, can crescendo  to that of abject terror that traumatizes us and  freezes us in our tracks. Modern man  becomes unable to move, resulting in him/her being consumed by irrational emotions, non-adaptive beliefs and behavioral practices.

This precipitates poor health, illness and limits access to care as well as compromises treatment outcomes. About 80% of the U.S.'s  healthcare costs are lifestyle related illness expenditures, attributable to irrational emotions, non-adaptive beliefs and behavioral practices.

Clinical hypnotic trance is a therapeutic pathway to  enlightened,  lasting  change, facilitating one to become unstuck, but not just to fight or flight as our primal ancestors would to survive. Modern day clinical hypnosis and man’s limitless capacity for   absorption in problem solving enables him to evolve beyond just surviving to experiencing life with quality by acting expectantly toward sustainable longevity  through integrative mind body health and lifestyle practices.
