Patient Perspective: The comfortable confidence of whitening
March 21st 2012Like a lot of patients, Xiaomi Tong wanted to improve her smile. She had tried some whitening systems, but a lack of results still left her self-conscious when it came to smiling or laughing. All that changed when she became a patient at Dr. Gary Nelson’s Leesburg, Va. practice and was introduced to Opalescence PF from Ultradent Products.
"Essentially a great answer for patients..."
March 21st 2012With the advent of vital tooth bleaching, the market has been flooded with options leaving patients confused about the process and often misled by Internet marketing and unsupervised OTC products. For a lot of our patients, nighttime bleaching with custom trays is simply not an option although it is a preferred method for many dentists as it uses carbamide peroxide with lower concentration and slower release time.
"...not only dramatically changes the appearance of teeth, they strengthen them as well."
March 21st 2012Five years ago one of my patients, Kim, asked if she was a candidate for LUMINEERS-not the traditional veneers I had recommended-after she saw an ad in Ladies Home Journal. My comfort zone was doing traditional veneers that I had been doing for the past 20+ years, and I felt confident in my abilities to properly place these in my patients’ mouths who wanted a smile makeover done. Making the move

Wire up your systems to serve you best
March 21st 2012You need another workstation for your expanding staff, or you’re planning a new office. Or maybe a staff member’s computer has just died. So why not run out to the nearest chain store and pick up a computer or two? Because then you might just be stuck with something that will not serve your practice well and because you already forked out the money, it may be unlikely that you’ll replace your mistake any time soon. That’s why you should consult with experts like Paul Hinman and Keith Aderman before you start making purchases involving computers, wiring, monitors and other audio/video systems. Hinman is president of Liptak Dental Services (liptakdental.com) and Aderman is the president of Mr. Hookup (mrhookup.net).

March 21st 2012Back pain is the last thing anyone working at a lab bench wants to put up with every day. That’s why ceramist Shawn Holmes of Becker Dental Laboratory in Herculaneum, Mo., looked into exercises and new seating in an effort to combat his lower back pain. What he found was a two-for-one solution in stability balls. Now that he has swapped his traditional dental lab chairs for these stability “exercise” balls, Holmes’ back pain has gone away and he’s feeling better and stronger while at work.
A little clarity on CBCT imaging
March 21st 2012By now, we’ve all pretty much heard about just how much additional information and clinical data can be gathered by using cone beam 3D imaging. However, many GPs are not sure exactly which cases are best suited for this evolving technology, and there also has been confusion and concern in recent months about radiation doses and possible health risks with children exposed to too many CBCT scans.

"The only curing solution you need..."
March 21st 2012When I started in dentistry in 1986, the most powerful quartz halogen light required at least 40 seconds to fully cure an increment of composite, while conventional curing lights lacked power. When indirect restorations asserted their presence in the 1990s, materials like Empress (Ivoclar Vivadent) leucite porcelain or feldspathic porcelain veneers allowed light penetration. However, materials like InCeram (VITA) and Procera (Nobel Biocare) still did not.
