Wine Down at Great Wolf Lodges

Article

It's fun to splash with your children, zipping down slides, running through geysers, waiting for bucket dumps and jumping in swimming pools. But what about adult time? Great Wolf Lodge's new Wine Down Service enables parents to reward themselves with a bottle of wine and a side of culinary treats.

Wine Down Service texts you when your order is delivered so they do not wake your children

As a parent, what do you want most after a day of frolicking through water play in a 79,000 square-foot wet world with your children and hundreds of others? A glass of wine, please.

We always knew that Great Wolf Lodge, a chain of 14 waterpark resorts, understood kids. But with the launch of Wine Down Service, grown-ups need not worry about their leisure time. Wine Down Service began after Memorial Day at Great Wolf Lodge resorts in Williamsburg, Virginia, and in Grapevine Texas. The company plans to expand the service to other properties later this year.

Alas, this kind of casual fun is not possible at most waterparks because adult refreshments, if offered, cannot be enjoyed past the late afternoon, when the gates close. Dragging bleary-eyed tots to your hotel’s cocktail lounge is not only bad form, but it guarantees getting the evil eye from the other patrons. If one parent or adult bellies up to your property’s bar, that leaves the other 21-plus wide-eyed and dry in a roomful of overtired kids. And besides, what you really crave, along with sleeping tots, are a few hours of peace, quiet, camaraderie and some chardonnay.

With Wine Down Service, a bottle of wine is delivered to your room, accompanied by cheese, cured meats or dessert at a time you choose between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Instead of knocking on your door, which may awaken your little darlings and ruin the mood, room service texts you just prior to supplying the goods.

“The concept for Wine Down Service was developed as a way to provide parents with a wine experience they can savor after their children have fallen asleep,” says Chris Hammond, Great Wolf Lodge’s corporate director of food and beverage.

To make selecting easy, Great Wolf partnered with The Wine Group for four pairings: Chloe Prosecco with chocolate-covered strawberries, Cupcake Chardonnay with brie and dried apricots, Concannon Cabernet Sauvignon with prosciutto and olives or Love Noir, a Pinot Noir with dark chocolate. Those, however, are mere suggestions — you may mix and match as you wish. The Wine Down Service packages start at $35 and includes delivery.

In the meantime, you know which mega waterpark to plug into your GPS.
