DPR: How would you describe the current state of the dental industry in terms of technological advancements?

Eric Giesecke: Though the dental industry has made significant strides in adopting new technology, it still has a long way to go before reaching its full potential. Historically, the industry has been sluggish to embrace innovation, with a large percentage of offices slow to move off paper charts and film X-rays. However, today, we see promising developments such as digital records and AI-assisted diagnostics, which enhance patient outcomes and the patient experience. Despite these advancements, the adoption of modern technologies such as cloud-based practice management software remains relatively low – estimates are that only 10-15% of practices have made the switch, compared to upwards of 90% in other industries.

That’s why I’m dedicated to driving modernization within the industry. We've focused on integrating the latest technology seamlessly into dental practices, aiming to improve efficiency and efficacy while ultimately bettering patient care. While the journey towards full technological adoption in dentistry is early relative to other industries, it's clear that the benefits of modern, cloud-based software applications offer a compelling case to help practices run their businesses better.

Moreover, the adoption and rise of integrated, platform-based software with open APIs will foster greater innovation and interoperability among different systems, allowing dental practices to offer more personalized and comprehensive care.

DPR: What are the main benefits of integrating cloud-based technology into dental practices?

EG: Integrating cloud-based technology into dental practices offers numerous benefits, significantly enhancing productivity, data reliability, security, and compliance. Cloud-based systems streamline and automate administrative tasks such as scheduling, patient records management, and billing, allowing dental practitioners to focus more on what matters – delivering exceptional patient care. This transition also reduces the need for and cost of extensive IT maintenance associated with older server-based systems, as updates and backups are managed automatically, minimizing downtime and the risk of data loss.

Cloud-based solutions provide robust data protection against cyber threats and physical disasters, ensuring patient information is securely stored and easily recoverable. Safety and security are critical benefits, with these systems designed to support compliance with HIPAA regulations. Continuous updates keep practices aligned with current standards without manual intervention.

Implementing a cloud-based practice management solution into dental practices enhances both clinical and administrative operations by providing anywhere access to patient records and practice management tools. This facilitates real-time collaboration among team members, especially for multi-location practices. Standardizing data and reporting across an organization, a significant pain point for those using disparate systems, is another advantage. Cloud systems also integrate more easily with other dental technologies, fostering a seamless workflow and improved interoperability for a more efficient and effective practice.

By adopting cloud-based technology, dental practices create a more resilient and reliable environment for patient care while reducing administrative burdens and improving overall practice efficiency.

DPR: What strategies can dental practices use to smoothly transition to cloud-based software?

EG: To smoothly transition to cloud-based software, dental practices should adopt a strategic approach. Conducting a thorough technology audit is essential to identify current gaps and inefficiencies, providing a clear picture of what needs improvement. Engaging key stakeholders from various departments, including clinical, administrative, IT, and finance, is also crucial. Their insights and buy-in are vital for a successful transition, as they offer valuable perspectives on potential challenges and benefits.

Given that the dental industry is a close-knit community, reaching out to trusted peers who have already adopted cloud-based practice management solutions can be incredibly valuable. Their firsthand experiences can provide practical insights and guidance, helping you avoid common pitfalls and understand the real-world benefits. Developing a clear implementation plan with detailed steps, timelines, responsibilities, and benchmarks for success is essential. Additionally, comprehensive training for all staff on the new systems will help ensure long-term adoption.

DPR: Can you share any success stories or case studies of dental practices that have successfully adopted cloud-based solutions?

EG: The proof is in the results our clients have achieved by transitioning to our Planet DDS cloud platform, Denticon, a practice management solution. For instance, we recently completed the largest single-weekend software conversion in our company's history, transitioning over 80 offices and 1,300 staff for Park Dental Partners to Denticon. As Park's CEO Pete Swenson stated, “this move to cutting-edge cloud technology reinforces our patient-centric philosophy and positions us well for continued growth while delivering best-in-class care.”

Beyond that massive undertaking, we've had success stories across practices of all sizes. Dental365/Premier Care Dental Management has rapidly expanded from just 2 locations a decade ago to 110 practices across the Northeast running on Denticon and our imaging software Apteryx. And pediatric dental group Lone Peak has achieved greater efficiency and consistent reporting by unifying their 70 locations in 15 states on our platform.

From single offices to multi-site groups, I've witnessed our cloud solutions empower dental organizations to standardize operations, centralize data, and scale – all while elevating their level of patient care. The practices embracing this cloud-based future are seeing transformative benefits in clinical excellence, revenue growth, and more.

DPR: What is your vision for the future of cloud-based software in dentistry?

EG: My vision for the future of cloud-based software in dentistry is one of widespread adoption and integration of advanced technologies that transforms how practices operate and deliver care. While the dental industry has lagged in technology adoption, the benefits of secure, reliable cloud systems are too substantial to ignore. I foresee that cloud-based platforms will become the norm for practices of all sizes in the coming years, streamlining administrative tasks to allow practitioners to focus on providing exceptional clinical care. Capabilities like AI-assisted diagnostics, remote monitoring, and seamless data sharing will drive better health outcomes and patient experiences.

Furthermore, I envision a future where cloud-based platforms facilitate greater interoperability across different providers, practices, and systems, allowing for more holistic patient care and better health outcomes. As the technology continues to evolve, it will empower dental professionals to adopt innovative treatment methodologies, provide personalized patient care, and efficiently manage their practices with reduced overhead and increased flexibility. This shift will ultimately lead to higher standards of care, improved patient satisfaction, and more scalable practice operations.

DPR: What advice would you give to dental professionals who are hesitant to adopt cloud-based solutions?

EG: For dental professionals hesitant to adopt cloud-based solutions, my advice is to approach the transition with an open mind and a focus on the long-term benefits. Change can be daunting, especially when it involves the core technology your practice relies on, but the advantages of moving to the cloud far outweigh the challenges. Staying with outdated server-based systems poses significant risks and can hinder your ability to meet patient expectations for seamless digital experiences. The dental industry is evolving, and embracing cloud technology is essential to keep pace.

Conduct a thorough evaluation of reputable vendors and seek references from other dental practices that have successfully made the switch. This research will build confidence in the technology and ensure you choose the right partner for your needs. With careful planning and support, adopting cloud-based solutions can significantly enhance your practice's capabilities, ensuring you remain competitive in an increasingly digital landscape.
