Research from Colgate finds several of the companies products can neutralize 99.9% of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Colgate recently shared the findings of a pair of studies showing several of the company's home care products can neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19.
The first study, completed in October in partnership with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s Public Health Research Institute and Regional Biosafety Laboratories, found toothpastes with zinc of stannous, as well as mouthwash formulated with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were effective at neutralizing 99.9% of the virus. The study looked at ways to reduce the oral viral load among affected patients and found Colgate Total and Meridol toothpastes were effective after 2 minutes of contact, while Colgate Plax and Colgate Total mouthwashes showed similar efficacy after 30 seconds.
In a press release, Colgate stated that the study results point to the use of some toothpastes and mouthwashes as strategies for reducing viral spread by reducing the amount of virus in a person's mouth.
In a concurrent study sponsored by Colgate involving 50 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 Colgate Total with CPC and zinc, Colgate Peroxl, and Colgate PerioGard mouthwashes were effective at temporarily reducing the amount of virus in a patient's mouth.
Additional studies with Colgate products and COVID-19 patients are ongoing.
