Health care delivery organization Benevis has released its 2024 Oral Health Report Women vs. Men, which highlights key differences based on how gender approaches care. As May is Women’s Health Month, Benevis felt this was a pertinent time to address these disparities in care, according to a press release from the company.

Research in the Benevis 2024 Oral Health Report demonstrates that women tend toward better oral health care, but, despite this, have a greater likelihood of developing cavities. Men, meanwhile, tend to have a higher risk for oral cancer. Other key points in the report note that hormonal changes during a woman’s pregnancy can lead to oral health issues, such as the increased risk of cavities and gum disease. Cost and the misconception that preventive oral care might cause issues during pregnancy may deter pregnant patients from receiving the oral health care they need, per the report. As of 2022, anyone in the United States is eligible for pregnant and postpartum Medicaid for 60 days post-birth.

This report aims to educate both patients and clinicians on the various ways that care is affected by gender, according to Benevis Regional Director of Clinical Dr Jane Whang.

“Sex- and gender-related health disparities in oral health continue to be underappreciated and overlooked relative to well-being, which calls for an increased emphasis on improving oral health in a way that addresses both sexes and the differences between them when it comes to how they pursue care,” Dr Whang said in the press release. “Through proper education and access to high-quality oral care resources like those offered by Benevis, we believe all of our patients are well-positioned to improve the state of their health now, while preparing for new oral care needs that may present in the future.”

The Benevis 2024 Oral Health Report Women vs. Men is available to read online here, as well as a video that summarizes its findings.
