Ahead of this great educational event, the company had introduced CEREC Tessera Advanced Lithium Disilicate CAD/CAM Blocks, a new material for CAD/CAM-fabricated restorations for the anterior and posterior region. The advanced lithium disilicate (ALD) ceramic offers high esthetics and flexural strength.
In this exclusive interview, Shivi Gupta, DMD, a dentist from San Diego, California, describes her first experiences with this new material.
Q: For single-visit indirect restorations, clinicians have grown accustomed to making trade-offs. Efficiency versus esthetics. Esthetics versus strength. How do you experience these situations in your everyday practice?
A: Yes, I am quite familiar with this issue. In fact, there are only a few dental ceramics on the market that are both high-strength and esthetic at the same time. CEREC Tessera is a material that combines both. It has a strength of more than 700 MPa and really offers very good esthetics. I can see this in the many patients I have already treated with it. The difference between this new material and the materials I have used in the past is that with every use I get to know CEREC Tessera better and better and I usually discover new possibilities when customizing it. But even more important is that CEREC Tessera can be processed incredibly quickly. The restoration is produced faster than ever, which is equally beneficial for us dentists and the patients.
Q: CEREC Tessera stands for esthetics, strength, and speed in 1 material. What do you consider to be the feature that makes it special?
A: Basically, I only use materials that meet specific conditions from the outset–and you have just mentioned them all. With CEREC Tessera, I'm impressed by the speed. CEREC SpeedFire can be quickly preheated, and a CEREC Tessera crown is ready after about 4.5 minutes. That is fast.
Q: What impact does CEREC Tessera have on the workflow?
A: The CEREC workflow remains the same, and the type of preparation is no different from any other lithium disilicate. You need a good preparation with a clearly defined margin as well as an excellent intraoral scan. If all these requirements are met, which is easy to achieve with the Primescan, you get a restoration that is quickly finished and simply fits.
Q: CEREC Tessera is an Advanced Lithium Disilicate. So, material science is quite interesting but more important for the clinicians would probably be, how the product performs in daily CEREC routines. Could you please share your thoughts on that?
A: The biggest impact of the new material on our practice workflow is that we are just so much faster. If we have an emergency patient who needs treatment, we can do it the same day with this faster material in under 2 hours. You can “juggle” the schedule a little easier for those types of treatments and still provide a smooth and seamless patient experience. And that’s key. With an esthetic and very strong material that can also be processed quickly, you fulfill 3 patient requirements at once: a long-lasting restoration, a beautiful smile, and only a short visit to the dental office. And my patients and I are happy about that.
