Quip, a new company that says it believes good design offers more effective solutions to personal care than gimmicks and technology, released a simplistic toothbrush that has both professionals and consumers buzzing.
The brush is made of a premium aluminum material and features evenly spaced bristles for optimal cleaning. It also includes a smart electric motor that models correct technique and timing with pulses every 30 seconds and two minutes. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for a total of two minutes twice a day-the 30-second pulses alert brushers to move to a new quadrant of the mouth and the two-minute pulse indicates finishing time.

In addition, Quip's subscription service reminds users to replace their brush head on time by having supplies delivered straight to the front door every three months. The company says it can deliver its product at a lower cost than major brands because this all done through its website. A starter kit costs $40 and includes the brush, a case and a tube of toothpaste. The replacement bristles and toothpaste cost $10.
“On the surface, the technology seems very impressive. With its price point, I think people might be very attracted to it,” said Dr. Sheri Doniger, a member of the Dental Products Report Editorial Advisory Board. “It’s also important that there is a sensory cue to let people know the brushing duration hasn’t ended and they need to keep brushing. I’m very interested in seeing what this product does.”
"If you want to ensure your patients are changing toothbrushes at regular intervals (like they should), Quip is what you’ve been looking for," said Dr. John Flucke, technology editor and chief dental editor for Dental Products Report. "It’s a turnkey solution for regular replacements of a patient’s toothbrush."
Quip founders Simon Enever and Bill May have raised $300,000 in capital and will reportedly look for more to meet demand as the brand takes off.
