Even within the digital world, new technology-like the DEXIS® Platinum sensor-continues to enhance the x-ray process all around the office. I have owned digital x-ray since 1993, and I have not seen advancements like those that have taken place in the last year.

With DEXIS Platinum, capturing crisp, detailed images and organizing them within my practice management system has never been easier. But, more than just the advanced imaging capabilities, the design of these sensors takes digital radiography to new levels of convenience and functionality in a clinical setting.

Combining all the complicated technology into a small sensor is an amazing accomplishment. In a very positive step, all the components previously found in converter boxes have been incorporated right into the sensor itself-resulting in a direct USB connection.

Because the sensor’s connector plugs directly into the computer, we don’t need costly adapters or docking stations that can break or get misplaced. Another detail that impresses me is the gold-plated USB connector that ensures durability in a very busy dental practice.

Elements such as TrueComfort™ and WiseAngle™ design address both operator and patient concerns-the balance between efficiently getting the job done and creating a positive experience for the patient.

TrueComfort incorporates a smoother sensor body and beveled corners, eliminating the sharp edges inherent in traditional film and some other sensors. WiseAngle refers to how the cable exits the sensor. It does so in a way that there is less torque on the cable, even when taking vertical bitewings, making crimped or damaged sensor cables less of a concern in my practice.

Design efficiencies are important, but when it comes to digital x-rays, the image quality is the most critical feature.

The Platinum sensor’s PureImage™ technology acts behind the scenes in a sophisticated interaction between line pairs and megapixels. DEXIS notes that the Platinum’s resolution results from the inclusion of more than 20 visible line pairs. Additionally, Platinum has a 2.2 megapixel size, and the images feature 16,000 shades of gray that allow me to see the subtle details crucial to diagnosis.
