Reasons for hope
Dental technicians are now being trained from the poorest segment of the Afghan population. Orphans and widows are being taught the skills of dental assisting, dental clerical, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology. These smart and ambitious students will soon be changing the dental care in their country for the better. The Afghanistan Dental Relief Project has established a training center in Kabul, complete with a modern clinic as well as a complete dental laboratory.
Students enrolled in the program will have the option of graduating to become Afghanistan’s first dental assistants and clerical workers, or going on to become a hygienist or laboratory technician. The program is approved by the Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan, and is sponsored by the Kabul Rotary Organization.
The school and clinic occupy a large compound in the nice suburb of Karte-Char, southwest of the city center. Classrooms are located in the new, two-story hospitality center in the compound, which is surrounded by a high wall and has 24-hour security. A trained Afghan cook provides meals for students and volunteer teachers, and the guest house has facilities for comfortable sleeping and relaxing as well. The modern clinic on the site was constructed in California inside a 40-foot shipping container and then shipped to Afghanistan, along with 120,000 pounds of dental equipment and supplies. Three complete operatories with x-rays and cavitrons, a modern sterilizing area, and a complete laboratory make up the clinic, which is supplied with plenty of clean water and electricity. Students receive training in the classroom, as well as during the operation of the clinic, in which they assist volunteers who are actually treating patients.
You can help
Volunteers have the opportunity to assist this humanitarian effort. The clinic, school, and volunteer hospitality center are now open year-round. The volunteers can stay at the facility, and help with the education of the students as well as provide treatment to the poor Afghan people, primarily women and children. This is a wonderful way to give back to the less fortunate.
Volunteers are asked to pay their own expenses, as well as to contribute $15 a day to their board and room cost. A two-week stay is the recommended minimum. For more information, please go to the website www.adrpinc.org, e-mail the headquarters at adrp@verizon.net, or call 1-805-963-2329.
Donations to help support the costs of this operation are greatly appreciated, and can be sent to ADRP, PO Box 734, Santa Barbara CA 93102. All donations are applied entirely to the project. The Afghanistan Dental Relief Project, Inc. is a 501C3 Non-Profit Charitable Organization.
