Eye on Technology: Furnaces

The porcelain firing oven is not just a standard piece of equipment for the crown and bridge and full-service lab, it is a necessity. As pressed ceramics and CAD/CAM restorations gain in popularity (72.7% of lab owners in the January 2009 DLP Technology survey indicated an increase in demand for zirconia-based work during the past two years), the pressing furnace—as well as the combination firing/pressing dual configuration—and the sintering oven join their pervasive porcelain brethren and require consideration of their own unique specifications and operating parameters.
